South Sydney's Greg Inglis is almost certain to miss the NRL season opener against the Sydney Roosters, after he was today ruled out for four to six weeks.
Inglis had scans on the left ankle he injured in Saturday night's loss to the NRL All Stars on the Gold Coast.
Inglis was diagnosed with a chip fracture and sprained ligaments in his ankle.
New coach Michael Maguire was disappointed with the injury to his marquee man but said it provided one of the club's younger players with a chance to make a name for himself in the opening weeks of the competition.
"Greg may be out of our side for a few weeks and I know he will work as hard as he can to get back as soon as possible," Maguire said.
"However we have other options in the centres and this will give some young guys a chance to start the season.
"We have guys like Shaune Corrigan and Dylan Farrell who have first-grade experience that have had great pre-seasons, so we'll be looking to those guys to step up and do the job.”
The Rabbitohs, who lost to Warrington in their opening trial at Redfern Oval just over a week ago, will play their second trial against last year's runners-up, New Zealand Warriors, at BCU International Stadium in Coffs Harbour on Saturday night.
It will be their final hit out before taking on St George Illawarra in the Charity Shield at ANZ Stadium on Saturday, February 18.
