Dumbleyung triathlon triumph

08 Feb, 2012 11:34 AM
DUMBLEYUNG’S 11th Be Active triathlon was a memorable one due to the presence of the Peel Thunder Football Club, which entered 19 teams and boosted the numbers enormously.

The group was spending a team bonding weekend at club president John Ditchburn’s farm at Kukerin.

The triathlon was a cool down for the group after an exhausting day of physical activity.

However they hit the track hard, recording some very good times with three teams recording less than 55 minutes for the 400-metre swim, 14-kilometre cycle and four-kilometre run.

The 60 players and 10 team officials then enjoyed a barbecue and salad tea around the pool.

The guys were a credit to the Peel Thunder Football Club and were also so supportive to other triathletes.

The day’s events were a great spectacle as 110 triathletes churned through the water, whizzed around on bikes, pounded the pavement or did all three if entered in the ironman.

Once again Sarah and Tim Wiese of Highbury were victorious in the iron section, with siblings Rika and Daniel Erasmus of Boddington less than 50 seconds behind the winners respectively.

It was racing at its best.

Third in the open ironman was local Josh Ball in a great time of 57 minutes.

He was followed by Wagin’s Lance Stibbs, who after many years of competing in a successful team in the November triathlon, branched out to do the three disciplines.

Stuart Chamberlain of Newdegate and Dennis Baker of Albany both recorded good times.

The long course (400/14/4) vet ironman was a strongly contested race with Bruce Wilson of Albany breaking the coveted one hour and being closely followed by Katanning’s Cameron Taylor and Graeme Mayes of Albany.

Garry Harris of Corrigin, Arthur Tonkin of Albany and James Matthews of Wickepin had a good race as did Vanessa Perkins, the only vet ironwoman.

Jenny Dolan won the short course ironwoman (200/7/2) followed by another Nyabing competitor Mandy Edwards.

Blake, Cory and Connor Page filled the placing in the student ironman while the all girl team BFF of Phoebe Skerritt, Abbey Page and Holly Dowling recorded a very good time.

The open teams’ event went to Scott Richardson and Annabel Paully.

The junior event had eight ironmen and two teams.

Those to compete in the iron section included Narrogin’s Courtney Perkins, Jack Hilder, the Wiese trio Dan, Bill and Emma and Dumbleyung’s Jordan and Chyvanna Pearson.

First home was the Mouly mates team of Marshall Henry, Harrison Edwards and Jack Pearce with Lil Surfers, Erin Ladyman, Sienna and Carie Ball the next team in.

Jade Perkins, Sophie Hilder, Jessica Dolan, Skye Baker and Blair Ball all managed the mini course as ironmen.

Thank you to the locals who entered, officiated, catered and cooked; the pool managers – as usual the pool was immaculate; and the shire and shire foreman for the signage.

This Saturday afternoon Corrigin will hold its tri and a fortnight later on, Sunday, February 26, Brookton will hold a morning event.

These are both great events.

Katanning has fixtured its event for the middle of March.
