Wagin men’s team wins Challenge Cup

30 Jun, 2010 01:27 PM
WAGIN travelled to Narragin on the weekend for what was considered the mid-season grand final in the association.

This pits the top two teams at the mid-way point of the season playing against each other, playing for the Challenge Cup.

Wagin's record hasn't been great having only won one Challenge Cup in the past 15 years. Dumbleyung was Wagin's opponent seeing as they are on top of the table and Wagin was hoping to continue their good form against them, having won the past couple on the turf.

Wagin had 15 players turn up for the game, but were missing Darren Spencer and Terry Anthony who missed out on qualifying.

Wagin started the game strongly and got on the board first thanks to a great goal from Ben Hodge on a penalty corner.

Wagin then had a great chance to pile the pressure on Dumbleyung as it received a penalty stroke.

Unfortunately for Wagin, Paul Ward's flick was saved by the goal keeper.

Dumbleyung then got a goal of its own and the score was 1-1 going into half-time.

Wagin again scored first in the second half, with Brenden Hall earning a hard fought penalty corner, then Ben Hodge converted it smashing the ball past the goalie.

Wagin seemed to be running the game out better, but in true Dumbleyung fashion they fought back and levelled the score again.

Dumbleyung's goalie Jamie Frost was keeping Dumbleyung in the hunt with some amazing saves on penalty corners.

As it had been the last two times the teams met, the scores were tied up at the final siren.

Seeing as it is the Challenge Cup it was into extra time, then penalty flicks if required.

The first goal wins in extra time and both teams were trying very hard to finish the game.

The deadlock didn't look like breaking until 30 seconds to go, when Paul Ward hassled a Dumbleyung defender back to the baseline and neatly picked his pocket and looked up to see Dwight Kellow had sneaked forward.

Ward neatly passed the ball between two defenders and onto Kellow's stick, who seeing the goalie was of his line smashed the ball into the far corner of the goal and delivering the Challenge Cup to Wagin.

It was another great game in which neither side deserved to lose.

Dumbleyung really played well and both teams certainly played the game in the right spirit.

Ben Hodge and Paul Ward were again outstanding for Wagin they had a lot of helpers with Brenden Hall, Tim Weaver and Alan Anthony playing great games.

Wagin's defence also played well with Kim Hough going close to best on ground and Ben Kirk and Xavier White both playing solidly.

Shane Bliss was again brilliant in the goals and Dale Lloyd, Sam West and Bryce Stephens all played well of the bench and had a real impact overtime they were on the ground.

Goalscorers were Ben Hodge 2 and Dwight Kellow 1.

Umpires' best players were Kim Hough, Dwigth Kellow and Ben Hodge.

Congratulations to the Wagin women's team who also won their Challenge Cup 1-0.

Wagin's next game is on Friday night at 7.55pm versus Rangers and all players must attend training.
