IT IS that time of the year again when people are asked to open their hockey bags, clean out last year’s dirty socks and get ready for the upcoming hockey season.
Wagin had a very successful 2011 season, though players were left disappointed when both the men's and women's teams lost their grand finals.
After last week’s annual general meeting there have been a few changes to the hockey club line-up, with Amber Ness stepping up to take over the presidency and Dwight Kellow at her side as vice-president.
Dale Lloyd resigned from president and has stepped into the secretary’s position, taking over from Terri Spooner who has done a superb job over the last few years.
Emily Holt again took on the job as treasurer and will continue the excellent work she did last year.
This year the women's A-grade team will again be looking to continue as a dominant force in the Upper Great Southern Association.
They have quite a few returning players and Paul Lydiate is again taking on the coaching role.
Any ladies interested in playing A-grade are asked to contact Paul Lydiate.
Wagin also looks set to nominate a women's B-grade team again this year.
Although last year wasn't a huge success for the B-grade women, it was a great opportunity for those new to the game, or possibly lacking fitness, to enjoy the game.
The women now have some much needed experience and, with added coaching support from Dale Lloyd and Dwight Kellow, exciting times are ahead.
Anyone that is interested in playing women’s B-grade is asked to contact Dale Lloyd or Kerry Riseborough.
The men, after fielding two B-grade teams last year, again have a lot of numbers to choose from.
With at least 21 players putting their hand up to play, there are already too many players to nominate a single B-grade team.
This year the association will not allow Wagin to nominate two B-grade teams, which forces Wagin to tell players they can no longer play hockey, or to nominate an A-grade and a B-grade team.
At present, the club is searching for anyone that would be willing to coach an A-grade team.
If someone can be found who will commit to the job, Wagin will nominate an A-grade and a B-grade team.
It is essential a coach is found who is willing to do this job, otherwise it will be imposable to nominate an A-grade team and consequently a number of people will miss out on playing hockey.
Wagin men are also looking for any players who are interested in playing A-grade.
The club has the numbers, but is lacking a bit of talent to be completive.
Those who are interested in coaching or playing are asked to call Dwight Kellow on 0418 612 109, Dale Lloyd on 0429 946 803 or Brenden Hall on 0417 952 593.
The club is also interested in helping out with any costs a coach would incur, as it understands it is a time consuming commitment.
The Wagin Hockey Club is a social and fun organisation to become involved in.
It is fun for all ages and hockey is a great way to stay fit and healthy.
We look forward to seeing everyone at training, with the times and dates yet to be announced.
