Changes to top eight at Wagin Golf

18 Aug, 2010 11:37 AM
THE Wagin Gas Electrics sponsored sixth qualifying round played last weekend attracted a field of only 25 starters.

Perhaps some golfers needed a spell after the four days of the State Sand Greens Championship last week.

The course was in pristine condition, especially the greens after the excellent rains over the past week.

The most notable changes to the top eight was Ken Adams with 73 off the stick, leaving him five strokes clear at the top of the eight.

Trevor Patterson put in his best ever card, with a terrific 85 off the stick to replace Peter Jenkin in the top eight.

The other big change was Gerard Hegarty.

Things didn't look too bright for Hegarty after his first nine holes produced a 47, needing an 89 or better to replace brother Wayne in the top eight.

He lifted his game with a fine 42 over the last nine holes, giving him his 89 and so replacing brother Wayne who had a day he would rather forget, coming in with a disastrous 101 off the stick and slipping into the second eight.

The A-grade competition winner was Trevor Patterson with 85-19-66 nett and the runner-up was Troy Finlayson with 78-11-67 nett.

The B-grade winner was the consistent junior Jason Retallack with 94-26-65 nett and the runner-up was Merv Stonehouse with 93-26-67 nett.

Other good scores were Locko Ballantyne with 68 nett and Ken Adams on 68 nett.

Novelties were to John Thompson three, Warren Holt two, Dave Hill one and Troy Finlayson one.

There are four and a half qualifying eights for the club championship, listed in order of qualifying:

Championship K Adams, second W Hegarty, third John Thompson, fourth M Stonehouse; J Ewen, P Jenkin, R Taylor, D Thompson; W Holt, G Stephens, A Bosenberg, J Riseborough; T Finlayson, B Barker, G Finlayson, T Bate; P Sprigg, T Tacken, N Broom, M Haverkort; G Nottle, R Stephens, J Retallack, J Ballantyne; G Hegarty, A Retallack, K George, T Watt; T Patterson, A Gath, G Cheriton, D Hill. Fifth: R Berwick, J Murray.

Thank you to Phillip and Merlene Sprigg for their generous sponsorship.

This week's competition is a stableford sponsored by CSBP with a draw for partners from 12pm.

The day's play will be followed by a barbecue.

Packs will be available, please bring along a salad.
