GREAT Southern District Rifle Association Centenary Prize Meet members of Wurgabup Rifle Club have been riding on a high after winning back the prestigious “Bone of Contention” in Albany three weeks ago at the GSDRA Team shoot.
The Wurgabup shooters continued this good form into the Australia Day long weekend shoot that saw Albany Rifle Club celebrate its 100th year.
Attendance was strong with 107 shooters making the trip from all over the country from Geraldton to NSW.
Australian Rifle Team vice captain Gray Robertson was chaired in as the winner of the 2010 Great Southern DRA Open Championship with a near perfect score of 498.61 out of 500 making this his third Grand Aggregate victory at the Great Southern DRA and his fourth Closed Aggregate win. Robertson also won Division 1 in the Sunday Aggregate with a dream run scoring 200 with 24 V Bulls and the Division Open Aggregate in Division 1.
Scott Newbey started a good trend on Friday winning Silver in the Division 2 Friday Aggregate and things only got better for him as he went on to win the Division 2 Sunday Aggregate.
This strong performance won him the 11th Badge in the Great Southern DRA Open Championship (shot over Saturday, Sunday and Monday).
He also took home the 5th Centenary Grand Aggregate Badge with a combined score from Friday’s shoot and the Great Southern DRA Open Championship of 638.60 not far behind the winning score of 643.69.
Both Gray Robertson and Scott Newbey were part of the four man Great Southern No.1 team that pipped the Metro District team, who’s score was 197.16, at the post with 197.18 to take out the Bill Price DRA Team shoot.
Wurgabup Member Roslyn Dixon also had a great weekend taking home the 13th Badge in the Great Southern DRA Championship and winning the Monday Aggregate in Division 3, the Closed Aggregate in Division 3 and the Division Open Aggregate in Division 3.
For the most improved handicap Dixon also walked away with a new rifle barrel and fitting courtesy of Woody Engineering and CG Inch.
These triumphs were celebrated again at the 300 yard Club Trophy Shoot at Wurgabup on Saturday January 30.
With gusty winds running across the range and new ICFRA Targets on their first use at 300 yards it was bound to be a tricky day, but that did not stop Glen Cook scoring a perfect 100 with 10 V Bulls stealing the Top off rifle honours from Gray Robertson who shot 99.14
To say that Cook was grinning from ear to ear would be an understatement; the handicap winner was also Cook with 104 followed closely by Dave Ogle on 103.
Wurgabup Rifle Club will also be celebrating its centenary this year at the annual shoot held over the Anzac Day long weekend.
On Saturday February 6 the 400 yards will be held at the Wurgabup Rifle Range and all are welcome.
