 Wind affects accuracy at goals

Wind affects accuracy at goals

02 Jul, 2009 02:31 PM
IT WAS cold and wet for football on the weekend and certainly this made a difference to the standard of football at some of the grounds.

It wasn’t quite as wet on Saturday in Wagin for the game between the home side and Boddington, but the strong and blustery winds had the players working very hard to play good football.

For Boddington it was an important game to hold onto their place in the four, and just as important for Wagin who needed to keep the top four teams in sight if they were to compete in the finals themselves.

The strong wind was blowing towards the town end of the ground and players had great difficulty in disposing of the ball accurately.

The first quarter was the most productive with players fresh and moving the ball quickly and there was only one goal between the two sides by the first break.

But good team football started to break down in the second term and the game became a battle of individuals as players found the blustery windy conditions hard to handle.

The smaller players were having the better of the game with Hardie, Walsh and Douglas for Eagles and Rowell, Shaun Robinson and Crosby for Wagin prominent.

There was little between the sides for the first three quarters with less than two goals the difference at three quarter time and with Eagles going towards the end favoured by the wind in the final term they could have been confident of winning the match.

However, Wagin showed some good fighting qualities and some strong individual efforts were holding Boddington in this term and the Eagles players were getting frustrated at their inability to press home any wind advantage.

As the quarter progressed, Wagin could sense a victory and the Eagles players’ frustration got the better of them and the loss of two players with yellow cards upset any hope they had of scoring.

Wagin held on, outscoring Eagles in this final term and winning by 18 points.

Tulley kicked three goals for Wagin with Rowell, A Jacobs and Shaun Robinson the best of a hard working team. For Eagles, Black kicked three goals with Gerhard and Walsh their best.

Williams continued their undefeated run with their 10th win this season and a comfortable 70 point win over Wanderers in Katanning.

Cats were rarely troubled and outscored their opponents in every quarter, running home with a six-goal final term to keep Wanderers scoreless.

Crosby for Cats was again in good goal kicking form with another seven with good form shown by Gilholme, Fergus and Berlund.

For Wanderers veteran Kowald was their main goalscorer with two goals and good form shown by Massey, D Colbung and Allen.

Hawks dealt any faint hope Cougars may have had held for a finals chance by defeating them in Narrogin by 30 points.

Hawks led by coach Wheatcroft in the centre jumped away to a good lead by the first quarter and it was only in the final quarter when Cougars made any impression on the scoreboard holding Hawks goalless and kicking two themselves.

For Hawks Richardson top scored with five and the side was well served by Wheatcroft and two of their young brigade in Boughton and Luscombe.

It was the veterans of Cougars who worked the hardest for their side with Ricky Mott kicking two goals and best for the side were Bolt, Ward and Holmes.

Wickepin had little trouble in winning over Panthers in Brookton – taking the game by 53 points.

It was a strong team effort by Warriors who had eight of their players kicking goals.

It was a far more even Warriors side and Panthers were once again relying on individual efforts and those individuals tired as the game progressed in the difficult conditions.

Warriors were well served by big men Astbury and Crouch with Crouch and Lorenti each kicking three goals.

It was the smaller Panther players who worked the conditions for their side, with Mark Allington and Pike their best and McNeil and Jetta kicking two goals.

Players are reminded of the training session for the Landmark squad at Williams next Saturday afternoon.
