Wagin wins second game of the season

11 Feb, 2010 02:56 PM
WAGIN took on Narrogin in their second last game of the season at the Wagin Oval on Sunday, where they chased down Narrogin’s score to post their second win of the season.

Captain Lane Taylor won the toss and elected to bowl first which would soon be found to be a smart decision.

Taylor opened the bowling from the swimming pool end and Terry Anthony took the ball from the grandstand end of the oval.

Both boys bowled extremely well and kept the Narrogin openers to 10 runs in the first five overs. That’s when Taylor made the first break through for Wagin, catching a ball of his own bowling and giving Wagin the perfect start to the game.

The next two deliveries were both wickets to Terry Anthony who was bowling well and had the whole team behind him.

Another wicket fell soon after to give both opening bowlers two wickets each and see the visiting team slipping to 4/8 in the sixth over.

Bryce Stephens and Reece Andrews were the first two bowling changes.

They both tried really hard to get more breakthroughs for Wagin.

To their credit, the Narrogin team put up a middle order resistance and brought the wicket spree to a brief end when they put on 30 runs for the next wicket which came from a brilliant run out by Fraser Lydiate.

Lydiate fielded a ball on the boundary and threw a great ball over the stumps to have the batsman well out and giving Wagin yet another wicket.

Ben Ward and Kayla Gath were both trying hard to get in on the action, but were both really unlucky to have more success.

Conan Holder was the next bowler to try his luck and got the next break through in just his second over which came from some good pressure bowling.

Tyson Boyle made his debut game for Wagin and impressed everyone with his bowling that has come leaps and bounds from when he first joined the club right back at the start of the season. Boyle took consecutive wickets in his second over to have him on a hat-trick but unfortunately the ball just missed the edge of the bat and the fairy tale wasn’t quite completed.

Jason Ainsworth and Fraser Lydiate both came on at the end of the innings to wrap things up and it was off the last ball that Terry Anthony was once again in the mix of things.

He stopped a hard hit ball and cleverly threw it to Reece Andrews who flicked the ball onto the stumps to narrowly run out the Narrogin batsman, leaving them all out for 69 after 30 overs.

The Wagin team was on a high from an impressive fielding and bowling effort from everyone and it soon followed on into their batting.

Bryce Stephens and Ben Ward got Wagin off to the perfect start, scoring at five runs an over.

Ward was the first to lose his wicket when the score was on 22, which saw Terry Anthony join Stephens in the centre.

The two boys were playing with a lot of confidence and finding the gaps in the field easily.

They moved the score past the 50 run mark in just the 10th over, needing only 20 runs for the win. Due to the ruling that each batsman must retire after 10 overs, Stephens retired after making a great score of 15 runs helping his team on the way to a great win.

Fraser Lydiate was well caught out just two balls later, soon followed by Lane Taylor who was unlucky to only make three runs.

Kayla Gath put on a good partnership with Anthony but just fell short of hitting the winning runs when she was out after mis-timing her shot, the score at 4/66.

Jason Ainsworth started to play some stylish shots and found runs easy come by.

Both he and Anthony passed the Narrogin score of 69 and took the total to 85 before in a rush of blood, Anthony played over a ball that hardly bounced to see him lose his stumps and Wagin’s second wicket of the innings after making a well earned 13 runs.

Enter Reece Andrews.

Right from the start he was finding the middle of the bat constantly and every shot brought about runs for his team.

Whether it was delicate late cuts through gully, pull shots through point or the big shot over the infield, Andrews had the whole package and put on a show toward the end of the innings. Ainsworth was doing well to hang on with Andrews but was finally out after a good little innings of 7 runs off just 12 balls.

Conan Holder and Tyson Boyle were both on the end of two unbelievable one handed catches in the slips by Narrogin player Newbound and unfortunately didn’t make any runs.

Ryan Adrain played some glorious defensive shots but couldn’t find the gaps, he too was unlucky not to score but all three played a brilliant game.

Ritchie and Murray were the last pair in to bat for Wagin and the two did brilliantly to pile on another 12 runs for Wagin in the last two overs with Ritchie scoring 5 not out and Murray not out on 6.

Wagin should be proud of the way they played the game, every single player fielded, bowled and batted to their full ability and it paid off with a great win.

Thankyou to Nathan Pearce and Wade Enright who umpired the entire game, to all the parents who again brought a plate of lunch for all the players it is very much appreciated, and to everyone who helped during the day.

Congratulations to Kayla Gath and Conan Holder who will be competing in the Peel region carnival coming up on the long weekend at the end of February.

Best of luck.
