THE West Australian Country Football League had a fantastic year in 2006 culminating in 10 players being selected in the 2006 NAB AFL draft.
The Upper Great Southern Football League was represented by two players, Leroy Jetta (Brookton/Pingelly) and Jarryd Morton (Lake Grace/Newdegate).
The 10 country players drafted have had a mix of influences throughout their careers. Some have participated in senior country football, PSA (Public Schools Association), indigenous and education programs, WAFC State programs, Landmark Country Football Championships and senior WAFL football.
A combination of all these influences has helped develop and produce players of draft quality.
The Australian Railroad Group, in conjunction with the West Australian Country Football League announced an injection of development funds to regional clubs in Western Australia.
Each regional football club of the players' origin will receive funding of $2,000 for each player drafted.
The funding will be used for the club's continued effort in developing quality players.
The WACFL and the Australian Railroad Group will work together to ensure that the presentations are made at a local level to acknowledge the fantastic contribution of these clubs.
"It is a credit to the foresight of the Australian Railroad Group to be involved in such a fantastic program and also a credit to all country clubs to continually work hard, not only to develop quality players, but in some instances to retain quality players for their own competitions," said West Australian Country Football League General Manager Cameron Knapton.
"The West Australian Country Football League has had a record year with over 26,052 participants across Auskick, Junior, Youth and Open competitions and the appointment of full time Development Officers (Regional) at the beginning of this season.
"We now reap the rewards of the hard work of our dedicated group of volunteers, club coaches and administrators."
