HARNESS racing will return to Wagin with the first meeting of the current season on Friday, March 19.
It is the first of seven race meetings scheduled for Wagin within a short season with three meetings to be run in April and another three in May.
This is not the trotting club’s preferred fixture format but how the meetings were allocated on a State-wide basis.
The season will open with the annual Healthway meeting, which is a great family night out.
There will be giveaways and a prize draw of a bike and sporting goods for children to support the Healthway Be Active message.
Local community groups will also participate with active entertainment.
Free fruit will be available in the pavilion and a healthy choice meal will be discounted in the dining room.
Entry at the gate is free.
Racing should be keen and a seven-event program has been planned.
Great southern pacers have been performing well recently at other meetings and should be competitive for the placings.
The feature event is the annual Healthway Cup for pacers classed C5 and better over a distance of 2590m and there will be a race for three-year-olds.
The first race will start at about 6.30pm.
Under the direction of Ken Dowdell and staff of Aussie Stockyards, the Wagin Trotting Club has spent many hours upgrading the outer track security fence.
The club has also replaced the much vandalised lighting in the horse stalls with more suitable fixtures.
Another major work carried out with the assistance of the Shire staff was the resurfacing of the track.
It is now in top condition, which was indicated by the fast times recorded at recent trial nights.
Harness racing will continue in Wagin on April 1, 16 and 30 and May 14, 21 and 28.
