Scratch match goes down to the wire

Scratch match goes down to the wire

11 Feb, 2010 02:53 PM
THE Wagin B grade cricket club were scheduled to take on Cuballing in their first game back after the Christmas and New Year break. on Saturday, but the Cuballing boys weren’t able to field a side and unfortunately forfeited the match, handing Wagin their ninth consecutive win of the season.

With no cricket for six weeks prior, it was quickly arranged to play a scratch match of 25 overs each, which would see current players, previous players, and the fans make up the two teams. Following on from last year’s 20/20 bash between brothers Kim and Scott Davidson, the two were once again made captains and one by one selected their sides as if they were back in the school yard.

Both teams were picked and Kim Davidson won the toss and elected to bat first, sending in Mark Haverkort and Kevin Foale to open the batting.

The pair got their team off to a fast start, knocking the new ball around for ones and twos, before Foale skied a ball to Shane Bliss who took a great clean catch off the bowling of Andrew Gath. Jordan Scardetta was bowling economically, but was unlucky not to get any breakthroughs with the new ball.

Reece Taylor joined Haverkort in the middle and the two put on another fast 20 runs, but the return of left arm express bowled Graeme Painter, brought about the wicket when Taylor raised a good delivery to mid on where Gath took a good safe catch.

Dwight Kellow was the next batsman in, however his partnership with Haverkort was cut short when Kellow turned back for the second run and Haverkort looked up to see Kellow standing next to him and the bails being taken off up the other end of the pitch.

After some heated discussion it was decided that Haverkort had to be the man to go, run out for a good score of 17 but his side slipping to 3/41 off 10 overs.

Kellow soon followed Haverkort back to the shed when he was caught by Gath off the bowling of Painter for three runs which brought two new batsmen to the crease.

The two most current experienced customers of the Wagin Cricket Club, Gerard Hegarty and Greg Stephens then went about building a strong middle order partnership.

Both batsmen looked comfortable scoring against the bowling of spin from Blair Hutton who was ripping the ball from left to right but unable to claim a wicket.

Stephens and Hegarty put on a valuable 30 runs for their team before youth proved to be his enemy, when Bryce Stephens was rewarded with Hegarty’s wicket for 14 after some impressive bowling.

Captain Kim Davidson was then contempt with knocking the ball around for singles, giving the strike regularly to the in form Stephens.

Young Bryce Stephens would make the next breakthrough in the 18th over when Greg Stephens mis -hit his shot to mid-on where Andrew Gath took a good forward diving catch.

Another up and coming shining light, Wade Enright, made a quick couple of runs for his side but was unlucky when he timed a glorious shot off his pads but went straight to short fine leg where Blair Hutton was waiting.

Ramsay was making his debut appearance and didn’t disappoint with the ball, sending down some vicious missiles at the batsmen which sent shivers down the back of the batsmen waiting to come in to bat.

Just another young talent that Wagin have to look forward to is Nathan Pearce, who came on to bowl late in the game.

Pearce was up against the captain of the opposition, Kim Davidson, who also happens to be Nathan’s employer.

But that didn’t stop the young protégé from ripping out his boss’s middle wicket, handing him bragging rights around the workshop.

Brad Boundy and Brian Roderick were the last pair in and put on some handy runs in the last few overs to see their team finish on a competitive 8/130 in the 25th over.

Bryce Stephens was the pick of the bowlers with tidy figures of 2/16 and Greg Stephens shone with the bat scoring a solid 20 runs for team Kim Davidson.

Scott Davidson rallied his troops together and set the plans of attack on how to chase down the 131 needed runs for victory.

Jordan Scardetta and Jaxon Ramsay strolled out to the middle to face the bowling of Wade Enright and Greg Stephens.

Scardetta was the first wicket to fall from Stephens' first ball in just the second over when he flicked a ball out of the middle of his bat to square leg, where Brian Roderick took a sensational sharp catch to be very proud of.

John ‘Tank’ Murray didn’t wait to get his eye in and smashed two straight balls back over the bowler’s head for four, bringing cheers from the grandstands.

However Stephens out smarted Murray and beat the bat through to Kim Davidson who destroyed all three stumps to have have Murray stumped for eight runs.

Nathan Pearce didn’t bother the scorers making a second ball duck and Ramsay was out just three balls later, to leave Scotty Davo’s side in trouble at 4/17.

Gerard Hegarty proved to be a handful for the batting team, when he bowled brilliantly to contain both Bliss and Hutton to just eight runs from his four overs, which really tightened the screws on the batsmen.

Bliss fell early after making three runs and Hutton continued on building a good score with captain Scott Davidson.

Davidson looked to be in serious trouble when he rolled his ankle on the edge of the pitch, but refused to retire or call for a runner.

He continued ticking the scoreboard over, along with Hutton who was looking in the form of his life.

Davidson finally had no choice but to call for a runner, but was out soon after for 20, clean bowled by Taylor.

Dwight Kellow started off bowling his first over a little nervously, but recovered well to add more pressure to the batting side that needed to boost their run rate quickly.

A dropped catch from behind the stumps robbed Kellow of a much needed wicket, and up the other end, Kevin Foale was bowling well early.

With six overs to go, Scotty Davidson’s side needed 53 runs to win, which was looking a long way from their reach.

Graham Painter had other ideas, he joined Hutton in reviving the run rate with some big hitting off the bowling of Foale, and smashing 15 runs off Foale's last over, which got them right back into the game.

Reece Taylor came back on and was hit for 10 valuable runs off his last over, and Kim Davidson brought himself on from the other end and only went for four runs.

With just three overs remaining, the batting side needed 26 runs to win with four wickets in hand. Andrew Gath fell for just two runs by Greg Stephens and Colin Hall was clean bowled the next ball to give Stephens a hat-trick chance.

In good spirit, Stephens slowed down his bowling to young Bryce Stephens who made a quick three runs and giving the strike back to the in form Hutton who was still battling on..

Twelve runs came off the Stephens over, which left just 10 runs needed to win the game.

Kim Davidson bowled the last over and claimed the wicket of Bryce Stephens with the first delivery, sending the last of the juniors, Terry Anthony to the middle with a massive task to make 10 runs from five balls.

Despite their best efforts, both Hutton and Anthony couldn’t find the much needed boundaries, falling short by four runs to be all out for 126 in a close and exciting finish.

Congratulations to Blair Hutton who made a great innings of 33 off 48 balls, his highest ever score, and to Greg Stephens for fantastic figures of 4/23.

Well done to Kim Davidson and his team for winning the game.

Thankyou to everyone who helped during the day, it was a great fun day and a rivalry that will surely continue into the future.
