Scardetta and Hutton secure big win for Wagin

29 Oct, 2009 03:23 PM
NARROGIN Residential College travelled to Wagin to take on a slightly modified Wagin team in the second game of the season.

It proved to be a special day for Jordan Scardetta, who made a fantastic maiden century, and for debut off spinner sensation Blair Hutton, who rocked the NRC batting line-up to take incredible figures of 6 for 37.

The game was fixtured to be played in Narrogin, but due to bad pitch conditions the game was changed to be played in Wagin.

NRC won the toss and elected to bowl first in overcast conditions which would normally swing in the favour of the bowling side.

Wagin chose a new pair of opening batsmen in Jordan Scardetta and Mark Haverkort to take on the young, fired up attack and it proved to be a good move with Scardetta ticking the scoreboard over nicely and Haverkort doing his job by holding up the other end.

The pair went on to make an opening partnership of 59 before Haverkort was dismissed in the 15th over for a well earned 13 runs.

Kevin Foale was the next man to the crease and after a promising start, played through a good delivery to see his stumps tumble and Wagin lose their second wicket.

Dwight Kellow enjoyed a promotion to number four and joined Scardetta who put on a small partnership which saw Scardetta bring up a well made half century before the drinks break.

Soon afterwards, Kellow miss-timed a cut shot to be caught for a quick fire 10.

Brenden Hall wasn’t far behind him on his way back to the pavilion when he also miss-hit his shot, spooning an easy catch to covers leaving his team 4 for 126.

In his first game of the year, Greg Stephens strolled to the crease and began to steady the ship, combining well with Scardetta, who was finding the middle of the bat with ease and edging closer to triple figures.

With all of the team sitting on the edge of their seats, Scardetta smashed a short ball through point to the boundary to bring up his first century for the Wagin District Cricket Club off only 89 deliveries.

The carnage didn’t stop there, both Stephens and Scardetta were finding boundaries regularly before Scardetta was eventually caught out for an impressive and well deserved 123 runs.

His innings came to end after 103 balls which included 14 fours and 6 sixes, an innings the NRC boys were glad to see the end of.

However Stephens had other ideas, as he began to take charge of the innings and pile on quick runs along with Andrew Gath who joined Stephens to make a valuable 42 run partnership toward the end of the innings.

Gath scored a handy 23 runs before being dismissed which brought Blair Hutton in to bat with only four overs remaining.

Stephens provided some power hitting, bringing up his half century off a massive six; his half century coming off only 35 balls.

Stephens smashed the next two deliveries to the boundary before being clean bowled for an experienced and impressive 58.

Hutton was dismissed doing the team thing soon after, by chasing fast runs, which saw the cool calm and experience Gerard Hegarty and young Shane Bliss play out the end of the Wagin Innings for a comprehensive total of 8 for 282.

Wagin took to the field and threw the ball to Kellow, who after a shaky start, found his right line and length to claim the first wicket in the first over of the NRC innings.

Bliss bowled tightly from the other end, creating a lot of pressure on the young batsmen and was rewarded with a wicket in his third over after a calm catch was taken from junior superstar Wade Enright in the slips.

Bliss also took the next wicket in his sixth over, edging a good delivery to the keeper ending his spell with a wicket maiden and figures of 2 for 24.

Gath was introduced from the grandstand end of the oval and also began nervously but composed the over with a wicket, leaving the NRC 4 for 51 and in a lot of trouble in the 15th over.

Then came a middle order partnership of 86 runs between Clifton and Ward which frustrated the Wagin bowlers but it was encouraging to see the NRC boys digging deep to stay competitive in a match that seemed nearly over.

Clifton decided to play some massive shots off the bowling of Gath which seemed to surprise everyone, smashing 28 off one over in breezy conditions.

A change was needed as the batsmen were taking a liking to pace bowling so spin was introduced by Hutton making his debut match for the Wagin District Cricket Club.

Hutton was ripping the ball right from the first delivery and immediately caused problems for the NRC batsmen.

Stephens was bowling economically from the town end, building more pressure on the batsmen and it was in Hutton’s third over that he made the breakthrough Wagin needed, trapping Ward lbw to take his first wicket for the club.

With the next ball he claimed another wicket with a well flighted delivery, well taken by Bliss at short cover.

Unfortunately the fairytale wasn’t to be and Hutton wasn’t able to take his hat-trick but soon after removed the valuable wicket of Clifton, who scored an impressive 77 runs off 40 balls, when he hit a high ball to deep mid wicket seeing Scardetta take a juggling catch.

Hutton was having a day out when he sent down a fine delivery beating the number ninth batsman to have him stumped by the keeper handing Hutton his fourth wicket in just his fifth over.

Again with the next ball, he ripped through the defence of the NRC batsman, to be on yet another hattrick, handing him a five wicket haul.

The field was brought in close but unfortunately the hat-trick ball was played well by the young tail-ender denying Hutton his second chance of a hat-trick in one

game.

Stephens was denied of several wickets with some tough catches being put down but it was Hutton who consolidated to take his sixth wicket of the match when Hegarty took a fine catch to wrap up the NRC innings, all out for 169.

Wagin ran away big winners by 113 runs in the 30th over, awarding them the bonus point and a great start to the 2008-09 season.

Scardetta was the star with the bat, with Stephens contributing a great support innings.

Hutton proved to be a fantastic pick up for the club and is also to be congratulated on a fantastic first game.

The West Arthur Ice Play of the day was split between both Scardetta and Hutton as both players stood out equally ensuring a win for the Wagin boys.

Next game is against Towns in Narrogin this Saturday, October 31.

All players are urged to attend training on Thursday night from 5pm.
