Preston holds firm for win

ELEVEN players turned up at scroungers bowls on Thursday and waited in the clubhouse for bad weather to clear up.

Eventually play started on rink three, with Denny Dunham, Ben Pearce, Phil Harris and Steve Hill taking part.

At the half way mark, it looked like Hill would be the one to beat, before Harris took over the running, scoring 24 in the last half for a place in the final with a total of 36.

Dunham was next on 26, followed by Hill, after a good start only adding four to his first half total, finishing equal with Pearce with 23 each.

On rink four Murray Lathwell, Robert Kelly and Bernie Welland played out 22 ends, where Welland found some touch to go into the final with a well made 55, followed by Kelly on 41 and Lathwell on 36.

On rink five, with Neridah Monck, Norm Broom, Ken Preston and Bob Stephens, Preston played steady bowls to score 21 for the first half and 20 in the last.

He went into the final with a total of 31.

Stephens was using his new bowls and made a good 33, with Broom next with 23 and Monck with 14.

After checking the cards, Preston, Welland and Harris went on to A green, bowling in the opposite direction, where Harris could not find his way and Preston was still playing steadily.

He started the last end on eight, with Welland on six.

Welland just failed to overtake Preston, who was the winner on 10 and Welland was the runner up on nine, with Harris on five.

Scroungers are on again on Thursday, with names in by 1.30pm for a 2pm start.
