THE Great Southern Kart Club held the first round of the WA State Series on Saturday, with more than 100 nominations for the event.
The next three rounds will be held at the other three tracks in WA, with one in Perth, Busselton and Jennacubbine.
The track was prepared to perfection by Neil Morrell, Leo Nardini and Anthony Mort, whose hard work was much appreciated.
The meeting ran well overall with only a couple of stoppages due to rollovers.
Both drivers were alright, with one requiring a night in hospital to be on the safe side.
Thank you to the ambulance crew for being there and for doing such a good job.
There were four rookies nominated for the event and they all showed a big improvement by the end of the night.
There was a good field of J opens, which was good to see as this is a good starter class for anyone considering racing.
The class was won by Michael Keen, followed by Ben Butcher and Katanning driver Joel Anyon.
The KT lights class was closely contested, with only six points separating the top five placegetters.
Joel Ettridge managed to come out on top of this class followed by Ben Butcher and Michael Keen.
In the KT mediums class, Joel Ettridge again came out on top, followed by former Wagin resident Tony Little and Dave Jackson.
Paul Wettinger just managed to take out the KT heavy class by a point from ex-Woodanilling resident Glen Treloar, with Troy Dudek in third.
In the statesmen class, Steve Brooks took the win from Larry Maynard and local member Neil Morrell.
In the 125 lights class, Katanning driver Gary Bielby won the night, ahead of Phil Maley and Brent Ettridge.
Lannye Blaszcyk won the 125 heavy class ahead of Robert Mavay and Shane Austen.
Daniel Keen took out the 200 open class from Matt Morto and Robb McDougall (with the help of Sally who raced the last heat for him) finished in third place.
The outlaws class was down on numbers due to some drivers not turning up on the day and others breaking down during the night.
Robert Mavay won the class followed by his father Terry and Tambellup member Peter Arnold.
The thanked all the volunteers who gave up their time to help run the meeting as it would not have run as well as it did without them.
The next meeting for the club is a club run on June 5, with racing starting at 2pm.
The club encouraged anyone to come up and have a go in the unlicensed heat.
