First match on new pitch

19 Nov, 2009 03:40 PM
THE Dumbleyung cricket team played its first match for the 2009-10 season on the new synthetic pitch at Stubbs Park on Saturday, losing to Gnowangerup.

Malcolm Roberts took the first wicket on the new pitch with Marc Ball among the wicket takers.

Ricky Mott top scored with 50 and Wal Jefferis was the next best with a score of 27.

Dumbleyung is one of eight teams to play in the Katanning Association.

Wanderers and Australs both have two teams while Broomehill, Woodanilling and Gnowangerup each have a team.

This season Ricky Mott is president, Wal Jefferis secretary/treasurer and Scott Jefferis captain.

The game ended with a barbecue to celebrate the new pitch and thank those who were involved in its construction.

Shire works supervisor John Bairstow ripped up the old pitch while Murray Hudson and Graeme Coad completed the form work.

The concrete was left for three weeks to settle and then Michael Kain from Narrogin came to supervise the laying of the gabba grass, which was glued on to the concrete.

The Jefferis boys and Ricky Mott worked on this stage of the project.

Money for the project came from the Dumbleyung Events Committee, the Dumbleyung Shire Council and the Dumbleyung Cricket Club who each provided a third share.
