Cook wins mid-week scrounger bowls

11 Mar, 2010 02:52 PM
ON Thursday there was a good field of 19 keen players for mid-week scrounger bowls.

Mark Oakley, Denny Dunham, Merv Baker and Les Farmer started play on rink two, with Baker and Dunham fighting hard against Farmer.

The score at the first half had Dunham leading by a shot and with the other three keeping the pressure on in the last half, Oakley found it hard to get into the game.

At the finish Baker came out on top, edging Dunham out by one shot to go into the final with a total of 33, followed by Dunham on 32 , Farmer with 27 and Oakley with a hard earned 15.

Rink three with Michael Deworboies, Phil Harris, Ben Pearce and Ron Matters was an even contest throughout where Deworboies held a three-shot lead over Harris at the half-way mark.

It continued right to the end with Deworboies going into the final with 30, Harris and Matters on 27 and Pearce with 24.

On rink four Bernie Welland, Mary Riseborough, Lisa Deworboies and Leanne Cook played 18 ends where Cook showed she had come to play serious bowls by posting 22 for the first half and 23 in the last, to go into the finals with 45 shots.

Welland was next with 26, followed by Riseborough on 24 and Deworboies 13.

On rink five with Norm Broom, Murray Lathwell and Annette Hefford, there was a game of good fortune and bad where Annette was in front at the first half then Lathwell got a six to bring him into the game and on the 16th end, after being well down, he got six to bring him back.

Hefford was still in the lead with two ends to play and she failed to score when Lathwell got four and Broom two, which gave Lathwell a one-shot lead.

Broom got six in the last end to put Lathwell into the final on 45 with an unlucky Hefford next on 44 and Broom on 43.

On rink six with Diane and Bob Stephens, Gwen Lathwell and Neridah Monk, it was a good contest between Stephens and Monk and holding a seven-shot lead on the 14th end, Monk failed to score on the last four to allow Bob Stephens to grab the lead and a spot in the finals with a total of 33.

Monk was next on 31, followed Diane Stephens and Lathwell with 23.

After the cards were checked, Lathwell, Cook, Bob Stephens, Baker and Deworboies went out to play the four-end final.

With Cook playing consistent bowls she had eight shots going into the last end and with a little help from Deworboies when he ran into the head and took out Stephens' bowl.

Cook was declared the winner with 11 and Deworboies runner-up on five, followed by an unlucky Stephens on four, Lathwell on two and Baker on one.

Scroungers will be held on Thursday and names to be in by 1.30pm for a 2pm start.
