THE new green at the Lake Grace Bowling Club had a solid workout on February 9 and 10 with Lake Grace hosting their annual two-day classic.
The event has grown in popularity since its inception and the club now has five or six teams waiting in the wings to get a game.
This year they played on all eight rinks, fielding a full complement of 16 teams.
Bowls in Lake Grace has traditionally been a summer sport, though with the new green they will be able to play all year round.
But summer gave its best on the first day of the classic with Lake Grace recording its highest minimum and maximum temperatures for February.
With the mercury hovering on 39.8 degrees Celsius, the bowlers soldiered on.
Once again it was a hard fought two days with some exceptional bowls played.
The eventual winners were Wally O’Halloran’s team from Nyabing (back to back, which is believed to be a first) with 98 points.
There were joint runners-up, Stuart Blackwood’s East Fremantle team and Clive Bahr’s Kukerin team, both on 92 points.
It was a great effort by all these bowlers.
Day one winners were Tom Glendinning’s team from Manning with 50 points and day two winners were Clyde Douglas’s team from Wagin with 49 points.
Special thanks go to all the sponsors who make this day possible, it was a resounding success.
Once again a fantastic job was done by Helen Hunt and her band of helpers in the kitchen.
Thanks also to Shane Reynolds and Geoff Sabourne for doing the cards and cooking the meat and to Heather Bell for organising sponsors and collecting the banners and flags.
