 Big losses a highlight

Big losses a highlight

04 Aug, 2010 02:34 PM
THERE were some big losses in Upper Great Southern football over the weekend and Wickepin’s defeat has meant that its faint final hopes are now all but extinguished.

The game between Kukerin/Dumbleyung and Wagin in Dumbleyung on Saturday was a high-scoring affair with some 43 goals kicked for the game.

Cougars set the scene in the first quarter by kicking nine goals and having a seven-goal lead by the end of the first term.

Bulldogs were never in the game after that as Cougars extended their lead each term to finish the game 84 points in front and leapfrogged over Wagin back up to sixth place.

Nathan Ditchburn top-scored with five for his side, with brother Troy continuing his good form with another best on ground effort.

Dane Tulley worked hard at full forward for Bulldogs with a bag of six, with Dale Painter and Jaxon Ramsay the best for Bulldogs.

Wanderers won their 10th successive match with an annihilation of Brookton/Pingelly at Quartermaine Oval.

A tremendous first quarter when they kicked 11 goals to just one by Panthers destroyed any thought that Panthers may have had of making a game of it.

Another 12 goals in the third term helped Wanderers to amass a total of 35 goals for the game and kept their hold on second place with a massive percentage boost.

They finished up in front by over 160 points with their young players leading the way.

Haiden Schloithe had a day out kicking 10 goals and his side’s best player with solid support from Ryan Flugge, Laurie Collard and Ryan Davis.

David McKinlay scored four of his side’s nine goals with Troy Bassett, Moulton and Crawford battling hard for Panthers.

Wickepin looks to have lost any faint chance they may have had in playing finals with a big loss to Williams.

While there is still a faint chance for Warriors, the big loss certainly damaged their percentage and makes it hard for them to get up.

Wickepin were held scoreless in the first term and it was only in the final term when they kicked four of their six goals for the game that they looked like challenging the strong Williams’ side. Farrant up forward returned to his goal kicking best with a bag of seven and was well supported by Robert Rose and Mat Gillett in a good team display.

Crouch was Wickepin’s best player and only multiple goalscorer.

Narrogin Hawks looked like taking it right up to Boddington and turning their recent form around.

They clearly had the better of the opposition in the first term and showed they were a much better side with Quartermaine back in the ruck and providing his midfielders with first use of the ball. However, Eagles came out in the second half a much more determined side.

They cut the deficit to three goals by three-quarter time and took control in the final term as Hawks players seemed to tire and run out of legs.

Craig Stewart was his side’s top scorer with five goals with Matt Larkins, Greg Beresi and Bryan Hardie good players for the full four quarters.

Ashley Ugle was prominent early but faded out as his side lost control of the game, but still kicked five goals to be among his side’s best with Haydn Drage and Quartermaine.
