WHILE many people spent New Year’s Day nursing sore heads, Wagin man Garth Nottle was stepping onto the field as the opening batsman for the WA side in this year’s Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships.
Held in Geelong in Victoria on January 1 and 2, the competition included teams from WA, Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory and new side East Asia Pacific.
As reigning premiers, the WA side had a huge task ahead of it.
The side was selected from country cricket associations all over WA and was captained by Rodney Ford, who plays in Williams.
Having played cricket for over 25 years, Nottle has most recently played for Harrismith/ Dudinin in the Upper Great Southern cricket association.
The Country Championships was a mixed format, combining three two-day games, two Twenty20 games and two one-day games, with seven games played in total.
Unfortunately, Nottle injured his hamstring during the game against Victoria and only participated in three of the matches.
Although many of the games were tightly contested, WA eventually finished sixth, with New South Wales the overall winners.
Nottle was disappointed at his injury, but keen to get back out onto the pitch and hopefully make selections for next year’s competition in Bundaberg in Queensland.
