ELTON Hokianga can be justifiably proud of his achievement in shearing 301 Merino lambs in his one day record attempt last week.
Mr Hokianga (19) who has only been shearing for two and a half years, shore 70 and 72 Merino lambs in the first two two-hour runs of the day on October 17.
He then decided to give it his all in the third run, shearing 85 lambs, with 74 shorn in the final run to top the magic 300 mark.
This was Mr Hokianga’s best figures but the world Merino shearing record is 466, set by Terry Cartwright at Westerndale Station in 2003.
Mr Hokianga accomplished the feat while working for Barritt Shearing Services on Boyalling, west of Wagin.
Justin Barritt, an accomplished shearer himself who runs the team, said: “For his age it was a pretty good effort.”
With the temperature reaching 34C it was also the first really hot day of the summer.
Mr Hokianga, who grew up in New Zealand, moved to New South Wales with his family in 2003.
He has been shearing in various teams all over Australia and came to Wagin in 2008.
“My older brother taught me, he has been shearing for 16 years, 301 was my best ever,” Mr Hokianga said.
“I was 10 sheep down by lunch time and only decided to go for it in the third run, and finished 14 minutes early.”
A tally of more than 300 in a day, particularly shearing Merinos, is a sought-after milestone by shearers.
