Wagin gets into the Aussie spirit

01 Feb, 2012 12:28 PM
SET to be a scorching day, Wagin's Australia Day celebrations kicked off in the cool of the early morning with the annual breakfast at Wetlands Park.

By 7.30am, a good crowd had turned out to cook up their bacon and eggs in traditional Australian style on a barbecue under the gum trees.

With flags flying and Australian colours in force, both young and old got into the spirit of the national day.

The formal proceedings got under way with the Welcome to Country ceremony, before the flag-raising, which was performed by members of the Wagin Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service.

The crowd was then drawn to their feet for a rousing rendition of the National Anthem.

Member for the Agricultural Region Mia Davies then gave the formal Australia Day address, talking of the importance of community in regional areas.

Being from a wheat and sheep farm near Wyalkatchem and having relatives in the area, Ms Davies knows what it means to be part of a rural community.
