Trio brave cold for RFDS funds

02 Jul, 2009 02:20 PM
WAGIN farmers Greg Ball, Allan Thompson or Michael Taylor are taking their fundraising for the Outback Air Race seriously.

These three daring men, who are about to take part in the race to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, were challenged by Dean Morgan and a few others to swim the length of the Wagin Weir, a distance of 204 metres and back.

Despite the cold winter weather, and the temptation to stay in front of the bonfire that was lit to thaw the participants post swim, the men took to the water.

They started off slowly, with more wadding than swimming, but did eventually manage a few strokes that resembled swim styles.

There were many spectators that turned up to cheer the men on, although the atmosphere was quiet.

The chill factor may have stopped spectators from cheering loudly but it didn’t stop them from opening their pockets.

The Flying Cockies, as the trio’s team is called, raised $2,000 for the RFDS.
