COMMUNITY groups can now apply for Telstra Connected Seniors® grants worth up to $50,000 to help seniors make the most of modern-day communications technology such as mobile phones and computers.
Grant amounts range up to $5,000 for local community organisations and up to $50,000 for state and territory
organisations.
Elig ible community organisations can apply for Telstra Connected Seniors® grants at www.telstraseniors.com.au until 5pm AEST on March 5.
Acting Group Managing Director Telstra Consumer, Ms Glenice Maclellan, said the Telstra Connected Seniors® workshops are the perfect solution for seniors to conquer any technology fears.
“We understand some seniors may be a little apprehensive about using new technology.
“However the reality is that mobile phones and computers are simple to use and they open up a whole new world of communication which can be easily embraced,” said Ms Maclellan.
“No-one is ever too old to learn about technology and people are always surprised at just how much they can easily do online, like banking, shopping, finding out
about new interests and joining social groups.
“Telstra Connected Seniors® workshops are conducted in a friendly and inviting environment where seniors can learn at their own pace alongside friends and neighbours.
“Attendees will also learn how to send and receive emails and text messages, which is the ideal way to keep in touch with family members - both young and old.”
Ms Maclellan said the workshops are a welcome social addition to community organisations.
“Seniors will find the workshops stimulating as they learn new skills and they are also an excellent way for community groups to attract and strengthen their membership base.”
The Telstra Connected Seniors® workshops have been successfully conducted around Australia and have
helped many seniors overcome social isolation.
Rod Lonsdale, president of the Hervey Bay Sixty & Better Healthy Ageing Program Inc., said the workshops were popular with its members.
“Thanks to the Telstra Connected Seniors® program, we are able to help our members better understand mobile phone and internet usage,” said Mr Lonsdale.
“Our members want to utilise the benefits of such technology to remain in contact with family and friends, both locally and abroad.
“Members also want to be familiar with online banking and shopping.
“We are now in a position to show them how to do this.”
Not-for-profit community organisations with a primary member base of people age over 60 are eligible to apply now at www.telstraseniors.com.au.
Orga nisations that have previously received grants and successfully completed their training can reapply for further Telstra Connected Seniors® funding in this round.
