ALL things science was the hot topic last Thursday when Year 8, 9 and 10 students from Wagin District High School sat through a careers presentation by
Scitech in the morning.
This was followed by some Year 8 and 9 students participating in a hands-on climate change workshop later that afternoon.
Photosynthesis, biodiesel, hydrogen powered cars and energy consumption were some of the topics looked at during the workshop.
Science teacher Claire Goodin said the Year 9 students were currently studying renewable and non-renewable energy in class.
Student Chantelle Wakefield said she enjoyed the workshop and would consider a career in science because she loved making things.
Scitech science careers co-ordinator Tracey Fuller said the workshop and presentation was designed to engage students and make science fun and exciting.
“We try to inform the students that science is not just about working in a lab – there are so many different career paths they can go down and some of them are really fun,” Miss Fuller said.
“Hopefully when we leave them, they are interested enough to make their own minds up about science
– we just point them in the right direction.”
