WAGIN is now the 12th Western Australian town to be recognised as Recreational Vehicle friendly.
Motorhomes and campervans are becoming increasingly popular across Australia and Wagin is set to play host to a good percentage of these travelling Australian's.
The Wagin Shire council recently entered into an agreement with Western Australian representatives of the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia.
The agreement will see members of the club making Wagin a choice destination for overnight stays that will benefit the region’s tourism and business community.
In 2006 self-drive tourists reportedly spent $1.25 billion throughout Australia and Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia State representative Phil Chadd said the recognition of Wagin as an RV friendly town will help it get its fair share of these valuable tourist dollars.
Mr Chadd was excited about the project when speaking with Wagin Shire president Phil Blight recently.
“I can see members of our club coming into Wagi,n having a brief look around on day one, which more than likely would include lunch or dinner at the local hotel or delicatessen, and a casual walk back to the van,” he said.
“Day two could include a tour through the historical village, a walk along the Wait-jen Trail or a visit to Puntapin Rock.
“Local businesses would benefit in the fact that our average spend is $100 per person per day and this money would go back into the community of Wagin through tourism, supermarkets, food outlets, vehicle repairs or hardware stores.”
Mr Blight said he could see a great future for Wagin as an RV friendly town.
“I think it is a great thing that these visitors are coming to our town and I am delighted to see that Wagin is in the first 12 towns in Western Australia to take on this venture,” he said.
“I encourage all people within the community of Wagin to think about how we may further welcome these people to our town and what services we can provide them that will ensure they come back again.”
