Police issue warning to secure farms

25/09/2008 2:38:00 PM
FARMERS in the area are being warned to be more pro-active when it comes to locking up their homes and valuables after a break in on the weekend.

Wedgegarup farmer Ian McDougall had his house broken into on Saturday, September 20.

“We were out of town for the day but our tenant that lives in the house close by said she heard the dogs going berserk around 10am,” Mr McDougall said.

“They didn’t trash anything, you could see they’d been quickly opening drawers and they messed them up a bit to see what was in there obviously,” he said.

“We lost two laptops, a digital camera, video camera, accessories for them, video projector, petty cash, jewellery and some other items.

“It’s very disappointing obviously; all my photos from recent overseas trips were on my laptop and about three years of my son’s uni lectures and assignments were on his laptop and he was just visiting for the day.”

Mr McDougall’s farm is located 21km out of town.

“I just want to warn other farmers to make sure their houses are locked,” Mr McDougall said.

“Also, if anyone happened to see anything strange or noticed a car they couldn’t recognise around that time if they could let me know.”

Wagin Police are encouraging not only farmers, but all members of the community to be more involved in crime prevention by removing all potential opportunities and temptations.

Mr McDougall said he would like the laptops back if possible because there were a lot of memories on them.
