WAGIN residents who receive regular kerbside pick-ups are soon to be delivered their green and yellow recycling bins.
Pick-ups will commence from Wednesday, March 10 and continue every second Wednesday thereafter.
The recycling bin will be emptied on the same day as the regular green bin.
Each of the bins should be placed at least 30cm apart.
Please do not place window glass, greasy boxes including pizza boxes and plastic bags in the green and yellow bin.
There are many items that can be recycled and these include milk and juice cartons, glass bottles and jars, steel and aluminium cans and all plastic containers.
These must all be rinsed thoroughly.
Other recyclable items include clean dry paper, newspapers and magazines as well as all clean dry cardboard boxes.
These must be flattened with no other packaging inside them.
This recycling program is designed to help Wagin dramatically reduce the amount of rubbish disposed of at the Wagin landfill site.
Wagin Shire Council acting chief executive Len Calneggia said he was excited about the project.
“This has been a long standing aim, to get recycling into our region,” he said.
“Wagin Shire Council order the recycling bins in bulk with 800 bins scheduled for placement in Wagin, 200 bins will go to the Shire of West Arthur and 100 bins are going to Woodanilling.
“Wagin will commence placement of the bins over the next few days with the first collection scheduled for Wednesday, March 10.
“This program is designed to stop a lot of waste of organic matter, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and aid in resource recovery, all this goes well for our planet.
“Recycling in this manner will also alleviate a lot of the current problems that the shire has associated with our current excess of rubbish taken to the Wagin landfill site.
“It is planned that all bins have a sticker on them telling people what is recyclable and what is not, although a brochure will be delivered at the same time as your bin,” he said.
“Distribution of the bins is free although there will be a slight increase in rates to cover the cost of the program.
“Wagin Shire Council is currently investigating ways of turning the green waste dumped at the Wagin landfill site into compost, but at the moment this is not cost effective.
“All non-contaminated waste from the recycling bins will be recycled at a Material Recycling Facility in Perth, but this will soon be done in Narrogin.”
Residents of Wagin Shire that do not have green bin pick-up at their homes can make use of the green and yellow recycling bins located at the Wagin landfill site.
The Wagin recycling program will commence in Wagin soon with bins being delivered prior to the first pick up on Wednesday, March 10.
The success of this project depends on the participation rate of Wagin residents.
