WAGIN held its first Antiques and Collectables Fair on Friday, August 27 and Saturday, August 28.
The event was a huge success with vendors displaying their wares from all over the state, with some even returning to Wagin after many years.
One person who returned to Wagin with her antiques and collectables was Leonie Bruvelis (nee Brown) who received a huge surprise during her visit.
Mrs Bruvelis was told by a local person in Wagin about something being stored in the hall that had her name on it.
This turned out to be true and the trophy that Mrs Bruvelis had won as a young woman in 1958 in the music festival held at the town hall was uncovered.
According to the Wagin Argus dated June 19, 1958, there were record entries for the music festival.
“An all-time record number of 170 entries have been received for the annual Music Festival to be conducted at Wagin on Tuesday, July 1,” the story said.
“Entires were submitted from Wagin, Narrogin, Katanning and Kojonup and a wealth of talent was heard in both senior and junior sections.”
Mrs Bruvelis won the perpetual trophy, which had to be returned the following year, along with a smaller trophy that she still has for the highest points awarded during the festival.
Carol Sharp (nee Watson) remembers the festival was held over several days and was amazing.
In addition to the people attending the fair to sell their antiques or collectables there was also a very popular valuation service available to assist people in gaining knowledge on the value or their own prized items.
Wagin local Cathy McAuliffe was one person who was very happy with what the valuation person told her about some items that were found in the bottom of an old wardrobe.
It is hoped that this event will happen regularly and the people that attended were happy they came to Wagin.
