Darkan to lose high school

17 Dec, 2009 01:23 PM
DARKAN will lose its senior high school at the end of this year.

Only six students were enrolled for high school at the district high school in 2009 and the school had only two scheduled enrolments for 2010.

The closure has meant one family will leave Darkan and move to Collie for their child to attend Collie Senior High School, which also removes one child from the primary school in Darkan.

It has been confirmed that one teacher has lost her position at Darkan School.

Karen Prowse, a high school teacher, can no longer teacher primary school students when there is no longer a high school attached to the primary school.

Maureen Chip, who teaches society and environment, is about to take a year's leave without pay and said she is unsure as to whether she will have a job to come back to.

Anna Painter, who is high school trained, does not have a job in Darkan where her partner works with the shire, and she cannot teach primary school if there is no high school attached.

Another teacher who is officially attached to another school out of the region does not have a job at Darkan and must return to her old school if she wants to continue teaching, which will disrupt her family life as her husband works in Darkan.

Art teacher Jane Neil-Smith will be attached to Wagin District High School in 2010 but teach at Darkan.

The school will be downgraded from its current level five and principal Carol Goodwin is leaving before this happens.

Deputy principal Penny Hooper (level four) will, at this stage, continue at Darkan but may in the future have to transfer out.

The school realised it would probably not last long with two potential students for 2010 but teachers and parents are surprised the decision was left so late in the year to announce.

All the job placements had been finalised and it is anticipated that within 12 to 18 months some office staff may lose their positions, library staff hours may be cut and even cleaning hours may be affected.

Some parents of students boarding away have welcomed the decision as they now qualify for government assistance and it was recently announced that they could also get this year's payment in retrospect.

The Darkan Primary School will get a new teacher in the new year.
