A DESPICABLE act of destruction has seen several graves at the Wagin Cemetery vandalised just before Christmas.
At a special time of the year when people visit their loved ones, smashed property is a disgraceful sight for them to have to face.
A member of the public noticed the vandalism on a recent visit to the cemetery and their first instinct was to clean up the mess.
Halfway through the job they became enraged at the thoughtless act and decided the public should know about it so they contacted the Argus.
At least half a dozen graves had been attacked, with the culprits removing ceramic vases and then smashing them, as well as breaking glass domes sitting on top of graves containing flowers.
The member of the public said the senseless acts were completely disrespectful to the sacred grave sites and those involved should be ashamed.
Sergeant Paul Lydiate said the Wagin Police was aware of the incident and was patrolling the cemetery.
“It is a criminal act to deface anything, but this is completely despicable,” he said.
“If we catch anyone doing this, they will be charged straight away – I will not hesitate.”
Members of the community are encouraged to keep their eyes open and if they see anybody vandalising any public property they are urged to contact the Wagin Police immediately.
