THE Wagin Rotary Club is participating in the Banners in the Terrace 2009 project.
The Wagin Shire Council was approached to submit a banner for this project and this year they offered the idea to Wagin Rotary Club member Gloria Bliss.
Mrs Bliss, who has a degree in Contemporary Aboriginal Art and graduated her Batchelor of Arts degree with first class honours, saw this as a great initiative.
“This is not just a great opportunity for the promotion of Wagin but the Rotary Club to the wider community,” Mrs Bliss said.
When Kerry Tacken, on behalf of the Wagin Shire, first approached Mrs Bliss she said yes instantly and then took it back to Rotary and sold them on the idea to be involved.
It was decided at the next meeting that the Rotary Club of Wagin would complete the project.
With innovation and renewal for the future being the convention theme, each Rotarian was given an A4 sheet of paper and asked to design what they thought should be included.
Mrs Bliss said she had the centre designed and then Paul Powell, Maurie Becker, John Johansson and Gary Griffiths added their pieces to the picture.
“Paul had a landscape with a kangaroo and an emu, John wanted to include the historical village, Maurie wanted to include horses from the past,” she said.
Mrs Bliss said they wanted to incorporate the Aboriginal community into the picture.
“That is how the Big Emu, which connects with the Aboriginal sign for travelling, and a campsite with blue depicting how important rain is to the season, came into the picture.
“This is all encircled by a pathway that connects the areas of the banner and we also incorporated Norring Lake as part of the landscape at the base with field bins, headers and Pederick's pinwheel rake depicting agriculture and innovation into the design.”
The banners will be displayed on the Terrace in Perth from Sunday, August 2 until Sunday, August 15 with the winner of the various categories being announced August 6.
