Scrabble unscrabbled

THE official tournament for the Ned Kelly Cup (a beautifully crafted trophy made by RW Engineering and Clinton Hulse on display at Rarebits on Burrowes) on Saturday, February 13 was postponed due to some late withdrawals.

But an enthusiastic and somewhat boisterous crew had an evening of scrabble practice for the main event, the date of which will be fixed soon.

Caroline Telfer has been installed as bookies' favourite to take out the cup after her Saturday night performance.

Junior basketball

IN THE first Biddies game of the night on Tuesday, February 16 Red defeated Yellow in a close game, 16 to 14.

Top goal scorers for Red were Sam Wasnann with eight, Cameron Richie with six and Luke Cavanagh with two.

Goal shooters for Yellow included Brayden Smith with eight and Daniel Chia, Rachel Gibbs and Hayley Barker all with two points.

In the second Biddies game White defeated Blue 14 to 10.

Jed Ainsworth again proved his worth shooting 10 points and Bonnie Telfer helped out shooting four points.

Point scorers for Blue were the Mepham brothers, with Isaac scoring six and Karhn scoring two and Brooklyn Nelson shooting two points.

In the Middies White defeated Red 14 to 10 with the Goss boys dominating the scoring, with Ben scoring ten and Matthew two and Samson Wallace scoring two.

For Red Harry Ayres and Amy Gibbs both shot four points and Alex Prowse two.

In the later game, Blue defeated Yellow 16 to 8 with Ben Cavanagh and Hayden King both scoring six points and Amy Roberts and Cohen Wunnenberg both scoring two.

Jake Putland was again the only goal scorer for Yellow, shooting the team’s eight points.

Darkan dartboard

THE Darkan Dartboard Club’s summer darts league came to its conclusion on Sunday, January 31 at the Darkan Hotel.

The day started with a play off between Jody White and Brian Fleay to decide the final playoff spot. After almost two months of battling on the dartboard the two could not be separated and this followed into the playoff with their match going down to the sudden death leg, with White coming from behind to snatch a win and sneak into the semi-finals.

In the first semi-final, Steven Foy defeated Jody White 3/2, in the second semi Dave Wright defeated Peter Lutz 3/0 and in the third and fourth playoff Peter Lutz defeated Jody White 3/0.

In the final, Dave Wright defeated Steven Foy 3/2.

Highest Peg went to Steven Foy and Highest Score of 174 went to Jody White.

The league table winner was Steven Foy and the fairest and best players were Adrienne Gillet, Dave Wright and Lindsay Shumach.

The fairest and best players' choice went to Peter Rhind and the wooden spoon to Jayden Webb.

Big business bash

THE annual street party put on by the businesses of West Arthur was well attended on Friday February 19.

Lots of locals enjoyed a free drink and sausage sizzle during the sundowner at the skate park.

As it was a family friendly event, there were lots of children running around enjoying the balmy night and the free cool drink.

It was a great opportunity for a catch up and good to see so many familiar faces enjoying themselves.

Darkan bowling club

THE men’s league round robin singles, pairs and triples two-day event was held on Saturday, February 20 and Sunday, February 21 at Katanning.

The local teams played well.

Darkan pairs division two entrants Ray Harrinton and Wally Woodruff won their event and Darkan triples players Murray Boxall, Hayden Lubcke and Ivan Wunnenberg also won their event. Moodiarrup bowler Neale Abbot won the singles, winning all five games he played over the weekend.

Warren Holt from Wagin was the runner-up.

Moodiarrup also won the division one triples with the team of John Schinzig, Jeffery Holmes Junior and Geoff Hosking.

Calendar of events

ANY organisations wishing to advertise community events on the West Arthur calendar, located in the rest area of the Darkan Railway Reserve, are asked to contact Kate at the Shire office on 9736 2222 with the details as soon as possible.

Shire works update

MAINTENANCE graders will be working on Bokal South, Coburn Soak, Belotti, Boscobel, Moodiarrup West and Collie East roads in the next week.

The construction crew is focusing on drainage on Howie Road between Carymunna and Bunce King roads and the building work is continuing at the Darkan Collocated Facility.

Banners in the terrace

GROUPS or individuals who would like to design and paint this year’s Shire of West Arthur banner for the Banners in the Terrace display please lodge an expression of interest with Kate at the Shire office on 9736 2222.

Cuppa with a councillor

SHIRE president Councillor Estelle Buller is available to meet with residents and electors on Wednesday, March 3 in the Shire office.

Recreation meeting

A RECREATION meeting for sporting clubs and recreational groups in the Shire of West Arthur will be held on Wednesday, March 3 at 7.30pm at the Moodiarrup Sports Complex.

All community members are welcome to attend.

Groups may have several members present and all those present are allowed to participate in the discussion.

But at the time of voting only one nominated representative from each group shall be entitled to vote.

West Arthur Landcare at Wagin Woolarama

THIS year West Arthur will be joining with other neighbouring shire Natural Resource Management Officers in the Department of Agriculture and Food WA and Scitech tent.

They will be promoting various Landcare projects across the shires as well as offering those of a handy nature the chance to make some nesting boxes for red tail phascogales and Carnaby’s cockatoos.

Those who can help supply some materials for the nesting boxes such as 30cm PVC pipe, rubber matting, weld mesh, chain, bolts or untreated 4 x 2 wood please contact MichelleGooding on 9736 2004 or 0427 361 124.

Gardening workshops

PEOPLE who are sick of watering the garden and would like a garden that is beautiful and drought-proof may be interested in a series of workshops coming to West Arthur soon.

The West Arthur Telecentre and the West Arthur Gardening Group will be working together on this project and contact people for further information are Kath Wharton on 9862 9032 or Chelsea Mepham on 9736 1019.

Darkan Pony Club

A REGISTRATION and rally day will be held on Sunday, March 7 from 11am at the Darkan Pony Club grounds, near the caravan park.

Everyone is welcome and further information can be sort from Bronwen Fowler on 9862 6124.

Tennis coaching

ARTHUR River Country Club is the venue for children’s tennis coaching on Wednesday afternoons.

Wagin Junior Football Club meeting

ALL interested people are encouraged to come along to the annual general meeting for the Wagin Junior Football Club on Monday, March 1 at the Wagin Football Club at 7pm.

Darkan Playgroup

PLAYGROUP has kicked the year off with a new committee for 2010.

Jodie King and Robyn Ewen have stepped into the president and vice-president roles, Sarah Fleay will be secretary and Amy White the treasurer.

The new committee will be holding a get-together for all parents in the community to discuss plans for this year’s playgroup on Wednesday, March 3 at 7.30pm.

Church news

THE Uniting Church meets on the first and third Sunday of the month at 9am.

The next service is on Sunday, March 7.and KYB is held on Tuesday at 9.30am at Duranillin School.

The Catholic Church meets on the first and third Sunday of the month at 8am and the next service is on Sunday, March 7.

The Anglican Church meets on the first Sunday of the month at 3pm at Arthur River, third Sunday of the month at 8.30am in Arthur River, second Sunday of the month at 8am at Darkan and the fourth Sunday of the month at 10.30am at Darkan.

The next service in Arthur River will be on Sunday, March 7 at 3pm.
