A look at the life of freemasons

16/04/2009 1:55:00 PM
MORE than 120 years of freemasonry in York will be celebrated with a community mini-exhibition titled The Butcher, The Baker, The Town Undertaker and freemasons and nonmembers alike from around the region are invited to attend.

To be held at the York Residency Museum, the exhibition will open on April 18 and will reveal the rich and fascinating history of Freemasonry in York.

Discreetly housed in their Lodge on Joaquina Street, the York Freemasons have an amazing collection of Masonic memorabilia spanning four generations.

With special permission granted by the Grand Lodge of Western Australia, these treasures are being made available to the museum and will be on public display for the first time.

“The Freemasons have been terrific with their assistance throughout this project”, said Sam Good, exhibition coordinator.

“Having access to the Freemasons’ collection and the Residency collection has made it possible to fill in the gaps, much like a jigsaw.

“It is very exciting to be able to link a person in a portrait, with an actual register entry and tangible items still used in the Lodge today.”

The result of this collaboration is a fascinating insight into the lives of three prominent York businessmen of the 1900s and their passion for the craft of Freemasonry.

The exhibitions takes people behind the curtain and presents to them the origins, regalia and tools of the craft.

The Residency Museum is located on Brook Street, York and is open from Tuesday to Thursday from 1-3pm and weekends from 11am-3.30pm.
